Waffle

Argente berkshire

15 January 2007 - 19 December 2008

About Waffle

We adopted Waffle (and his friends Splash and Gecko) from Brisbane Rodent Rescue when he was 9 weeks old.

Waffle (aka The Waff, Waffler, WaffyWat) was so named beacuse he was the warm golden colour of waffles and just as sweet.  His fur was a beautiful pale bronzed orange colour, with a lighter toned belly with a charming white berkshire dollop.   He had a beautiful, gentle, sweet, dignified face which showed his personality perfectly.   He was the calm in the minky storm around him, so was a nice break from the zooming troublesome Splash and Gecko.

Waffle loved a cuddle and happily went limp at the mercy of my hands.   But he also loved to bounce about and wrestle.  He'd cheerfully play in the water bowl, quite content to dunk his head right under the water and then bound over for a damp snuggle under your chin.  He was very inquisitive with new things and much braver than his cagemates when meeting new people and also with Uncle Schnoz and Uncle Noogs.

Waff grew into a huge squish of a rat.  He was a very gentle, laid back fuzz who loved nothing more than good food, a comfy hammock and a cuddle.  And perhaps, somewhat unfortunately, some water to lie down in (see Soggy Waffle below) and some wooden furniture to chew on (he left many a "Waff was here" graffiti around our home).

Waffle left us due to respiratory illness, which came on suddenly just before his second birthday.  We'll miss his calm, charming nature and the feeling of his warm soft fur as he flopped limp in our laps for a long scritch while licking us madly.  Farewell big Waffly.

I'm the sensible one!  The others are mad...

He may have arrived 2 weeks later, but he comfortably settled in with the others.

Tales of Waffle
The Waffle Character

Current nicknames - WafflyWat, The Waff, The Beasty Waffle (when he's power grooming Gecko).

Waffle is a strange character.  He seems so calm and dignified, but is just as full of naughty boisterousness as the other two.  He's the largest and seems to want to be alpha in the group, going by all the power grooming going on.  He has the most gorgeous coat - extremely soft and with a shimmering bronze sheen.  He's the kind of rat you want to snuggle against your neck, all warm and soft and furry.  He goes all limp when you hold him and gives you a resigned "Well, get it over with!" look as you kiss his soft belly and rub his warm soft fur.

Persistence is Waffle's special talent.  When there's something he wants he never gives in.  This goes for power grooming Gecko, and particularly for bin diving which is his disgusting habit (at which time we call him our "skanky bin rat").  The other night I had some mashed potato for their bedtime treat, which I'd placed on the dresser for after their run time.  Waffle had been climbing the cage door and while up there had smelled the mash and decided it was to be his.  I nabbed him mid-leap from the door to the dresser and placed him back on the floor.  One leap he was on my lap.  Another leap he was on the door.  Climb, climb, climb.  I nabbed him before he could leap for the dresser and placed him back on the floor.  This went on for about 10 minutes, at least.  <sigh>

Waff grows up

Waff has grown into an adorable large buck.  He's already a big boy in size, but he has a layer of soft squishiness just below his fur that makes him seem even squishier... he's like cuddling a furry doona.  He's rather laid back most of the time, loving a cuddle with me, but considers himself the alpha rat in The Grotto.  He's always power grooming Gecko, at least.  Waff has a charming way of grooming lazily while sitting on his furry rump, legs sprawled everywhere.  He'll do this for half an hour at a time!  He often grooms like this while leaning against the cage door, so I have to be very careful that I latch the door properly or he'd topple out onto the floor.  He enjoys sleeping on his head.  And chewing every piece of wooden furniture he can get his itchy teeth on.

Soggy Waffle

Waffle has a rather odd habit... he likes to sprawl in water!   The wading pool sits under their cage and during play time the boys like to splash about in it.  But lately Waffle has taken to lazing in it!  Actually lying down in the water for a relaxing cool soak!  When he gets up he's all soggy underneath from his chin down to his buckly bits.  And of course, then feels the need to climb onto my lap for a cuddle and to dry off his sodden belly fur on my clothes.  <sigh>
