First of all, my apologies for the lack of website updates lately. It's been hectic here with The Dapper Rat store, and attending a large pet expo and our local rat shows. Not to mention caring for four very demanding rats and a rambunctious toddler who doesn't seem to require sleep. Farewell Waffle: It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Waffle just before Christmas. He was such a gorgeous big licky squish and is missed dearly. There's a tribute to Waff on his webpage here. |

Hopefully there will be more regular updates now that we're through the first few exhausting months with a new baby! With a demanding Isabelle and running my business I simply don't have the spare time to answer all of the emails I receive each day. Isabelle has arrived! Alan and I are very proud to announce the birth of our daughter, Isabelle Claire. Born on the 16th October 2007, weighing 3.14kg (6lb 14.5oz). Isabelle is a cute, cuddly and calm little bub who isn't stressing out her new parents too much just yet. She has met the boys, who sniffed her with fascinated interest. No doubt she'll grow up to be an enthusiastic rat lover like her parents. More photos of Issy and the boys coming soon! |

The Dapper Rat Calendar 2008
We're nearly finished shooting the calendar and it should be announced and available for pre-order within a week or so. This photo of the adorable Waffle will be one of the images in it. You can see more of the calendar shoots here. Important notice to our customers Our first child is due 25th October, so anytime from now on I may drop off the internet unexpectedly for a few weeks. We will continue to accept orders during this time, but expect extended delays. I hope to have lots of stock in all colours ready beforehand, but would appreciate relaxed hammock colour choices to avoid extra sewing. I won't be able to do any custom hammock orders. We apologise for any inconvenience delays may cause. But rest assured orders will reach you in time for Christmas! So please order early for Christmas cards, calendars, and gifts for your rats and rat loving friends. |

Fuzzlets: Our three new little fuzzlets have well and truly settled in now and become as naughty and as adorable as a Dapper Rat should be (as you can see in the photo on the left). You can meet Splash, Gecko and Waffle on the Meet Our Rats page. New photos of them coming soon. Birthday Bucks: Noogs and Schnoz celebrated their 2nd birthdays recently. See some photos from their birthday party here. A Dapper Bub: In personal news, we're expecting our first child later this year! In preparation for the big event, we hope to have The Dapper Rat Calendar 2008 available early this year (ratty models obliging). And we encourage everyone to purchase their calendars and Christmas presents early, as we will probably have to close for a few weeks around late Oct-Nov. |

Brisbane Rodent Rescue
Brisbane Rodent Rescue, along with Australian Cavy Sanctuary, recently rescued over 100 rats from appalling conditions. Details of the rescue here. The rats are now safe at BRR, being properly cared for and responding well to love and friendly handling. Such a huge rescue obviously strains BRR's resources, but there's been a wonderful response from rat owners, both local and international, with donations of supplies, money and time. recommend a website: Rathelp.org
This site by Nat of Rats
are People Too! (one of my favourite websites) is an absolute wealth
of useful information for anyone wanting to help a rat they've found.
It outlines how to tell if the rat is wild or domesticated, the basic care
they need, and very detailed information on raising orphaned rats.
There's also an extensive list of worldwide rescue organisations, shelters
and experienced rat owners who you can contact if you need further help.
In addition, the section
on "Wild Rats" has sensible, practical advice on dealing with wild visitors
to your home... an excellent resource!

Foofferdomes!
That's Schnapps and Rumpy enjoying their foofferdome. "What's a foofferdome?" I
hear you ask. Well, a foofferdome is a colourful, warm and cosy rat
snoozing spot made by Andrea of Ratly Manor. Our boys have been enjoying
foofferdomes for well over a year now.

Rat Guide is THE place on
the internet for excellent rat care and medical information. Put
together by Karen and her team of rat experts, vets and researchers, this
site has detailed, up to date and fully referenced information for rat
owners and vets alike. There are three sections: The Health
Guide has in-depth information on common rat medical problems, their treatment
and very handy case studies with photos. The Care Guide offers advice
on general rat care including nutrition, behaviour and environment.
And the Medication Guide gives full details on drugs used in rats and their
dosages.

I just finished reading the
most wonderful children's book written by local Aussie author Lian Tanner.
The story contains several rat characters, which are perfectly portrayed
as the adorable interactive lovable pets they are. Lian beautifully
describes their quirky mannerisms, cheeky playfulness and above all their
devotion to their owners. And throughout the story she's thrown in
lots of great ratty PR! Rat fans are going to enjoy the book, and
non-rat fans are going to fall in love with them.

The story itself is "a funny, fast-moving adventure about friendship, change and the cutest pet rats you'll ever meet." As I read it, I found myself laughing, cheering and crying as Monty (the rat) and his friends made me remember all of my own rats and their charming antics. "Rats!" by Lian Tanner

Learn all about the rat's sensory world (what they see and hear and feel), see photos and video of all kinds of rat behaviour, hear the noises rats make, and lots of other interesting and fun information. Definitely a site for the favourites folder!
